Approximately seven new or existing roads in McKinney need new names or name changes to comply with street naming policy, according to a presentation heard by the McKinney City Council during a work session Oct. 1. A deviation from the street naming policy poses a public safety threat by creating challenges, such as duplication of or near-duplication of addresses, corridors and roads, especially in the case that medical services are dispatched to an area that becomes difficult to locate due to confusing addressing, according to the presentation. Renaming Harry McKillop Boulevard to FM 546 The presentation shows the need for a name change of Harry McKillop Boulevard to be designated as FM 546, once the new road is opened to the public. This will also change the name of the existing FM 546 road to a different name that is yet to be determined. County Lane to Airport Road Country Lane, which runs between Harry McKillop and US 380, will be renamed to Airport Road. According to the presentation, this name change would make roads consistent with current configurations and improves consistency in naming along the major road. The approval of this name change will require readdressing businesses along Country Lane. Unnamed roads Included in the One McKinney 2040 comprehensive plan, which was approved by planning and zoning commissioners Sept. 24, is a plan to extend US 75 southward. In that effort, an arterial road under construction would run southeastward from SH 5 alongside the Willow Woods Estates subdivision. The road is expected to be completed by January 2019. Another unnamed street, running from Laud Howell Parkway to future Hardin Road as an alignment for Trinity Falls Parkway, needs a name in order to be mapped on the city geographical information system and to identify locations for planning future expansion. This road is currently constructed from Laud Howell to about Middle Creek Drive. A new name is needed for the existing portion of CR 943 between CR 164 and Wilmeth Road as well as the planned future extension of that road, and the segment of future arterial north of CR 168 after construction. Names for the roadways near the new fire station, Station No. 10, will be needed before spring 2019. During the work session, Mayor George Fuller said the council will appoint a committee in the next 24 hours to start compiling name recommendations for the council to consider during a future City Council meeting
