Construction of the first phase of the Houston Street drainage improvement project will begin Aug. 16 in Buda, closing Rose Street until November.

Smith Contracting will start trench and utility work on Rose at Lilly Street. The first phase of the project includes open-cut excavation and drainage improvements within public easements and street right of way. There will be a total of eight phases.

Rose, between Railroad Street and Cedar Street, will be closed to all through traffic during the project. However, access will be allowed to local businesses and residential properties along Rose and Lilly, according to the city of Buda.

The improvements are being made as part of Buda's $7 million bond Proposition 4. The project is expected to be finished in late November.
