At Tuesday's Highland Village City Council meeting, members approved a resolution that authorizes work to be performed by Layne Christensen Co. to repair the FM 407 and Lake Vista well pumps.

Highland Village has a total of five wells, and without those two wells the city's water supply decrease is around 1.6 million gallons per day.

Both wells are used as a source of potable water supply for the city of Highland Village. The public health hazard posed to the citizens of the city of Highland Village by the unexpected failure of the wells is significant and constitutes an emergency, according to city officials.

"Anything we can do to make sure these wells last as long as they can is in our best interest," Council Member Fred Busche said.

On July 18, the city’s Lake Vista well, located in the Lake Vista subdivision, was taken out of service as it revealed motor startup issues. On July 24, the city’s FM 407 well, located in the 2000 block of Justin Road, was also taken out of service as it revealed pump flow issues.

Utility records show the Lake Vista well pump was replaced in 2015, and the FM 407 well pump was replaced in 2012. The typical life expectancy of a well pump is approximately five years.

Staff is monitoring the city’s water supply versus water demands closely to determine when, if needed, the city would need to move into more restrictive water conservation measures.
