Repairs to the flood control dam and spillway in Purgatory Creek Natural Area are now underway after being rescheduled from early July.

A Hays County contractor is repairing erosion in the area around the auxiliary spillway caused by the Oct. 2015 flood. The erosion did not affect the integrity of the dam and spillway, which remain structurally sound, according to the city of San Marcos.

Funds for the $171,000 project come from an Emergency Watershed Protection Program grant through the Natural Resources Conservation Service, with matching funds from the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board and Hays County.

Park visitors are encouraged to stay clear of the dam and spillway area as heavy equipment and materials will be present during repairs. The work is expected to be complete by Aug. 29.
