According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Katy’s senior population, age 55 and older, in ZIP codes 77094, 77441, 77449, 77450, 77493 and 77494 has increased slowly in the last five years. Seniors make up 16.5 percent of the population in Katy, according to 2016 census data.

Smart Asset, a financial technology company, in early June cited Katy as the best city to retire in Texas. Three factors contributing to this include income and sales taxes; number of doctors’ offices, recreation centers and retirement centers per 1,000 residents; and the size of the senior population.

“With this kind of infrastructure in place, Katy’s strong appeal to older residents will only continue to grow, and this demand will lead to more products from homebuilders that are designed to appeal to seniors,” Newland Communities marketing director Heather Gustafson said.

Subdivisions such as Elyson, Cane Island and Cinco Ranch Northwest offer senior housing options, which include patio homes and one-story floor plans. Some homeowners associations offer front lawn service for seniors as well, according to Veronica Mullenix, a Houston Association of Realtors member.
