A new advocacy group called Barker Reservoir Flood Prevention is calling on residents to attend a presentation and community meeting Thursday, July 12 to discuss flood control options in Katy. The meeting and presentation will take place from 6-8 p.m. at Kingsland Baptist Church at 20555 Kingsland Blvd., Katy.

The group is spearheaded by co-founder Wendy Duncan who currently serves as the Willow Fork Drainage District Director. Duncan said the event will offer residents the chance to discuss flood control options for the Katy area, specifically near Barker and Addicks Reservoirs.

“All of us in Harris and Fort Bend Counties were affected directly or indirectly by our recent floods. Many residents are still waiting to return to their homes or living in partially repaired residences,” Duncan said in a press release from the new advocacy group. “There are steps we can take to ensure better flood control for the future, but first we need to learn more about what is being proposed and how we help protect our property in the future.”

According to the press release, Steve Robinson of Allen Boone Humphries Robinson, LLP and a member of Houston Stronger, will deliver the presentation for flood control options for Katy. Robinson is also the legal counsel for the WFDD, Duncan said.

Duncan said the presentation will be followed by a question and answer session for residents.

“We will have an opportunity for residents to join our advocacy group and share their contact information with us at the meeting,” Duncan said. “This is the opportunity for residents to voice their concerns about flooding and the solutions. And right now, we need strong voices advocating for our area.”

Duncan said after seeing the more than 700 residents that attended the Addicks Reservoir Watershed community meeting hosted by the Harris County Flood Control District in late June, she hopes this community meeting will bring strong turnout as well.

The Harris County Flood Control District’s meeting for the Barker Reservoir Watershed will be held from 6-8 p.m. Aug. 1 at Memorial Parkway Junior High, 21203 Highland Knolls Drive, Katy.
