1) Canvassing the May 5 election
Incumbent Mayor Joe Zimmerman, incumbent At-Large Position 1 Council Member Himesh Gandhi and newcomer At-Large Position 2 Council Member Jennifer Lane recited their oaths of office once votes from the May 5 election were canvassed. Zimmerman ran against Diana Miller, while Gandhi ran unopposed. Lane ran against Farha Ahmed to fill Mary Joyce's spot on the council as Joyce chose not to seek reelection.
2) DWI Task Force Grant
Council members approved a resolution for the city of Sugar Land to participate in the Houston-Galveston Area Council Regional DWI Task Force Grant. The grant will use $5,500 from H-GAC and the Texas Department of Transportation to increased law enforcement presence by the Sugar Land Police Department for about two weeks at a time during the Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day holidays in an effort to get intoxicated drivers off the roads.
3) Development participation agreement
The council authorized a $227,711 development participation agreement between the city and Fort Bend County Levee Improvement District No. 2 to replace stormwater outfalls, or the exit point of a stream into another body of water. The agreement allows for maintenance of the outfalls, efficiencies in the project schedule, resolution of potential access issues and maintenance of a safe project site, according to meeting documents.
4) Water-supply agreement
Council approved a water-supply agreement between the city, the Brazos River Authority and Dow Chemical Co. Due to an increase in customer needs and a limited water supply, the BRA is allowing customers, including the city, to assign unused water supplies to other entities. With this agreement, Dow will purchase 6,388 acre-feet of water from the city at the current BRA system rate of $472,712, according to meeting documents.
