The early voting period for the May 22 runoff election, which includes the Republican primary race for the U.S. representative District 2 seat takes place this week, Monday-Friday. The runoff election was scheduled between Kevin Roberts and Dan Crenshaw after neither candidate secured 50 percent of the vote in the March 6 election. Roberts earned the most votes with 33.03 percent, with Crenshaw receiving 27.42 percent of the votes and Kathaleen Wall receiving 27.08 percent. Six additional candidates ran and received the remaining votes in the March 6 election. The winner of the runoff election will face Todd Litton, the winner of the Democratic primary, in the November election. Litton won the Democratic primary in March with 52.81 percent of the vote, facing four opponents. The District 2 seat is currently held by Ted Poe, R-Humble, who announced he will retire when his term ends in January. Roberts is currently District 126 state representative, but he did not run for re-election in order to pursue the seat in Congress. Crenshaw is a retired Navy SEAL. In an interview with Community Impact Newspaper, Crenshaw said his top three priorities are national and border security; national debt, spending and the economy; while Roberts said his top three priorities are funding Hurricane Harvey relief, improving transparency and combating the opioid crisis.
