Fifth- and eighth-grade statewide State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness summary results were released Thursday morning from the Texas Education Agency, and Hays CISD saw a slight increase in results from last year.

The STAAR results were from the first exams taken in April. HCISD fifth-graders saw a 7 percent increase in math scores and a 10 percent increase in reading. For HCISD eighth-graders, the district saw an 8 percent increase in math scores, while there was a 1 percent decrease in reading scores.

As students are required to pass the two exams in order to automatically advance to the next grade level, students will have two more opportunities to pass the exams.

HCISD Public Information Officer Tim Savoy said the administration is pleased with the results but the work needed for improvements is not over yet.

"This is just the beginning. These scores reflect the commitment of our staff and teachers work taking a full-team approach working to help the students," Savoy said. "We will continue to see improvements year over year."

Across the state, there was an overall improvement in both fifth- and eighth-grade math scores, but students had varied results in reading.

How students perform on the exam affects how schools and districts are rated in the state’s annual accountability system. In August, the state will roll out its new accountability system, giving school districts letter grades for the first time. Campuses will continue to receive the Met Standard or Improvement Required labels until 2019, when they will start to receive A-F grades.
