“When we say robotics, a lot of people make the wrong assumption—that these are people that work the robots in some big plant or something,” said Randy Wooten, TSTC Fort Bend County provost. “They install them and they service them.”
Large production plants, such as Frito-Lay, Toyota and Ford incorporate robots that do certain tasks, Wooten said. Students who study robotics technology would oversee the installation and regular maintenance of the robots, he said.
The robotics program at TSTC is five semesters, or roughly two years, and students will have internships worked in, Wooten said. Once students have an associate degree in robotics technology they can go on to get bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
“It’s been a hot program as far as interest goes, so far,” he said.
