With the help of the Tim Tebow Foundation, Eikon Church, 400 Old Post Road, Kyle, will be one of the first churches in Hays County to throw “A Night to Shine” prom night for locals with special needs. “A Night to Shine” is a prom night for special needs people age 14 and older on Feb. 9 from 6 to 9 p.m. Every guest is prom king and queen and receives a tiara and crown. They get to walk down a red carpet into faith-led, fun night. Pastor Dan Matlock said since the special needs community is so tight-knit, the party gives guests and their caregivers a night of fun and a chance to relax. “The thing we say at Eikon a lot is that everyone is welcomed, nobody is perfect, but anything is possible, and this event really highlights that idea,” Matlock said. “We want to have a night where these individuals wouldn’t think would be possible. That there’s this church that loves us enough to make this investment with their time and resources to pull this off.” Kaela McLeod, an intern at Eikon who planning the event, said guests will receive a prom date—a one-on-one volunteer who stays with the guest for the night, and caregivers who choose to leave the event will be given a gift certificate to a surrounding restaurant as a treat. People who attend the prom at Eikon will go to a salon first to add some extra sparkle to their attire, then they will receive a boutonniere or corsage. Next, they will walk down the red carpet, receive a tiara or crown and enjoy a social hour with chocolate fountains, photo booths, cotton candy, a video from Tim Tebow and a traveling balloon artist. Afterward, there will be dinner and then the dance. “It’s their night to shine,” McLeod said. So far, over 80 guests and 171 volunteers have signed up. There is also a waiting list for those still looking to participate.
