Eanes ISD board of trustees recognized Al Bennett, retiring Westlake High School volleyball coach, at its Dec. 19 meeting.
Bennett has earned over 1,000 wins as a coach, won 25 district championships and earned four state championships over 30 years with the school. He also teaches AP world history at the high school, Principal Steve Ramsey said.
“I’ve known coach Bennett since 2002, and right away he wanted me to know how welcome I was at Westlake,” Ramsey said. “I found out right away that there are certain people at Westlake High School that value the district and value the kids. He also took the classroom very, very seriously.”
Superintendent Tom Leonard recognized Westlake Chaparrals football program, which had an undefeated regular season in 2017 but lost Dec. 16 in the state semifinals. The team finished with a 14-1 record.
This season's team featured 31 students who were named to the Texas High School Coaches Association Academic All-State Team, he said.
Leonard also announced that Eanes ISD was one of 26 Texas schools listed by the College Board to the annual AP District Honor Roll. It is the second time the district has been named to the list, which recognizes districts based on advanced placement testing numbers and results from the past three years, he said.
EISD increased the number of students participating in AP courses while also increasing the percent of students scoring a three or better on AP exams, EISD spokesperson Claudia McWhorter said. In spring 2017, a total of 3,881 AP tests were administered at Westlake High School and approximately 75 percent scored a three or higher.
