On Thursday, the Comal County Commissioners Court approved an item that allows the county to request road construction funds from the Texas Department of Transportation to assist with local state highway projects.

The action stems from a call for projects initiated by the Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization that is updating its fiscal years 2019-22 Transportation Improvement Plan.

Comal County Engineer Tom Hornseth recommended a list of nine priority projects at Thursday’s meeting. Because of the competitive nature of requests for state funding, Hornselth said TxDOT would likely consider the top one to three projects, if any.

At the top of the list is the Loop 337 overpass at River Road that would tie in with the current Loop 337 road construction project and make it more seamless, officials said. The second priority is identified as intersection improvements on state highway 46 at FM3009, FM 311 and S. Cranes Mill Rd. The third is intersection improvements at FM306 and 2673.

If approved, TxDOT would pick up all or most of the funding for the projects, pending an assessment of needs. TxDOT will announce which projects it has selected for funding in April 2018.
