Every eligible Hutto ISD campus scored above the statewide target for the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) tests, according to Assistant Superintendent for School Support Dr. Robert Sormani.

STAAR assessments annually test school districts on student proficiency in the fields of reading, writing, science, social studies, U.S. history and multiple levels of mathematics. Students in grades 3-8 are assessed by these tests every year, though the tests change by grade level.

In his first meeting since joining Hutto ISD administration, Sormani presented the assessment findings to the Board of Trustees Thursday night. Sormani reported that every assessed Hutto ISD campus above the assessment target levels determined by the state.

Hutto Middle School received three distinctions from STAAR, while Hutto Elementary received two and Ray Elementary received one. School districts as a whole are eligible to receive distinctions from the state, but Hutto ISD did not register a distinction.

Distinction awards are given to districts and campuses for outstanding performance in relation to 40 other campuses of similar type, size, grade span and student demographics.

Hutto ISD Superintendent Celina Estrada Thomas told the Board of Trustees and those in attendance that while the district aims to satisfy the Texas Education Agency's standards, the STAAR assessments won't dictate Hutto ISD's agenda.

"We're not going to let just one test define us. It's not going to be the only thing we're about," said Thomas.
