With 100 percent of precincts reporting in Montgomery County and early votes counted in Harris County, Elizabeth Rhoden Harrell is the apparent winner in the race for New Caney ISD Position 1 with 990 votes, or 72 percent of the total.

Harrell's opponent, Yavonne Q. Martinez, received 368 votes, or 28 percent of the total.

"I’m overwhelmed," said Harrell, who previously served on the board from May 2010-November 2016.

Harrell said she looks forward to working on behalf of the district's children.

"Every decision that is made has to have the kids' well-being in mind," she said. "If you ask yourself when you make a decision, 'Does this benefit the kids?' If the answer is 'Yes,' that’s the right decision."

Harrell said the race for the board of trustees seat was a fair one.

"The last two times I ran for school board I was blessed with good opponents with good campaigns, and they are wonderful people," she said. "If I wasn’t running myself, I would have voted for them."
