The Lower Colorado River Authority announced Tuesday it is beginning a nine-month, $1.9 million project to recoat the bridge at the top of Mansfield Dam.

Motorists traveling on RM 620 may notice scaffolding and tenting equipment covering parts of the dam during the project, LCRA spokesperson Clara Tuma said. Work will be conducted in sections and is anticipated to be completed in June.

The dam will continue normal operations during the project, which is considered preventive maintenance.

“The dam is in excellent condition and continues to serve this region well,” said John Hofmann, LCRA executive vice president of water, in a news release. “We are recoating the bridge now, when there is minor amount of corrosion, to protect the dam structure so it can continue to function reliably for generations to come.”

According to LCRA, the bridge has not been used for travel over the past 20 years. The LCRA is currently in the middle of a separate 11-year, $10.5 million refurbishing project at Mansfield Dam.
