The San Marcos CISD board of trustees will discuss options for where to hold board meetings following two separate reports of air quality issues in its existing administration building.

Staff is slated to move out of the administration building, located at 501 S. LBJ Drive, San Marcos, within the next month after the air quality tests found mold in the building.

"Our main goal is to get everyone out of this building by Thanksgiving break," SMCISD spokesperson Andrew Fernandez said.

Staff will move to a currently vacant building at 631 Mill St. after the board voted last week to sign a two-year lease for the building. Fernandez said the building was previously used as a call center for the Texas attorney general.

According to the Hays County Appraisal District, the administration building at 501 S. LBJ Drive, which the school district owns, was appraised at $2.32 million in 2017.

At the Oct. 16 board meeting, Fernandez said trustees will discuss what will be done with the building and how to move forward with the recommendations from the two companies that tested the building for mold.

Trustees will also discuss where to hold future meetings. Fernandez said the board's two options are San Marcos City Council chambers at 630 E. Hopkins St. and San Marcos High School's criminal justice classroom. The classroom is slated to get video cameras to be used in mock student trials. He said the building at 631 Mill St. is not conducive to holding meetings.

Monday's board meeting will be held in the existing administration building at 501 S. LBJ Drive.

Fernandez said a leak in the building found in July prompted the district to hire someone to perform an air quality test. The district had another company run a separate air quality test in September and also found mold in the building.
