In light of the increased number of construction projects and developments currently underway in Hutto, the Hutto Public Works and Engineering departments presented a new staffing model that includes additional specialized employees to Hutto City Council.
"We're trying to divide the [Public Works] department out," Scott Stromsness, executive director of the Hutto Public Works and Engineering departments, told city council.
Among the specialized employees the Public Works Department will add in 2017-18 is a part-time animal control officer and a streets and drainage superintendent.
According to Stromsness, the department is not receiving the workforce applications they desire due to the posting of "mostly general" roles.
The Engineering Department is additionally looking to bring on another full-time engineer due to the amount of projects the department is currently working on and projected to work on.
Stromsness told council that departments are utilizing specialized jobs websites to increase the quality of applications they are receiving. The Public Works and Engineering departments are now recruiting on websites such as Glassdoor.com, Indeed.com and Governmentjobs.com.
With a fully staffed workforce beyond 2017-18, Stromsness told council the city can expect to see dedicated line repair crews for water and wastewater, dedicated utility support crews and more efficient customer support.
Stromsness and Hutto City Manager Odis Jones additionally proposed plans for an expansion and improvements to the Public Works Department building.
