This time of year, donations start slowing down at the Hays County Food Bank.

"During the summer and beginning of school, there just aren't as many food drives or donations coming in," said Mallory Best, communications coordinator for the nonprofit organization.

She said the food bank is very low on nonperishable goods, including the following:

  • Canned meats (such as tuna and salmon)

  • Canned corn

  • Macaroni and cheese

  • Tomato sauce

  • Canned fruits in light syrup

  • Low sodium soups

  • Pasta and pasta sauces

  • Low sodium mixed vegetables

  • Canned chili

  • Diced tomatoes

  • Rice

  • Brown beans

  • Peanut butter

  • Jelly

  • Granola bars

  • Oatmeal

  • Applesauce

  • Fruit cups

  • Raisins

  • Shelf stable milk

Donations can be made at the Hays County Food Bank, 220 Herndon St., San Marcos, or on the food bank's Amazon wish list.

The food bank is also collecting monetary donations for its 11th annual Turkeys Tackling Hunger campaign. Donations will be used to purchase traditional holiday foods that families in need can fix at home. More information can be found at www.haysfoodbank.org/home.aspx
