Hays CISD discovered seven schools were damaged by Hurricane Harvey during its storm damage evaluation Wednesday. According to Hays CISD public information officer Tim Savoy, water made it into four elementary schools: Science Hall, Blanco Vista, Pfluger and Camino Real. In addition, water came through the gym floors at three middle schools: Chapa, McCormick and Simon. The Hays CISD board of trustees called an emergency board meeting Thursday at 5:20 p.m. to address the issue. "The agenda was already posted for today, but when we confirmed yesterday about the damage, we wanted to meet as soon as possible to have workers come in this weekend before everyone left to Houston," Savoy said. The insurance company assessed the elementary schools would need $761,000 in repairs and the middle schools would need an estimated $75,000 for repairs. The board approved approximately $836,000 to repair the seven schools. Savoy said this weekend, nearly 200 construction workers will go into schools to cut 2 feet of Sheetrock from the walls of the elementary schools, remove the insulation and treat the walls with a sanitizing solution. The walls will then be lightly covered to let the walls dry out to prevent mold growth. "It's not going to affect operation," he said. "It will be noticeable because they will see the tarp instead of the 2 feet of walls in the classrooms, but that’s it. During weekends and student holidays this fall, they will go back and fix the the walls." For the middle schools, the gyms will be closed temporarily to have the floors redone, Savoy said.
