A sanitary sewer overflow was found off RM 620 between Four Points Drive and Zimmerman Lane Tuesday morning, according to an Austin Water news release. The overflow occurred due to a break in a 16-inch wastewater main from an unknown cause, Austin Water spokesperson Ginny Guerrero said. Over 100,000 gallons of wastewater has spilled from the break, the release stated. Guerrero said the sanitary sewer overflow has not affected traffic or any nearby buildings. Crews from Austin Water had stopped the water flow and were working to fix the damaged wastewater main as of 1:55 p.m. Tuesday, Guerrero said. Austin’s drinking water supply is not affected by the sewage, the Austin Water statement said. Austin Water recommends residents comply with the following safety precautions following the leak:
  • Avoid contact with wastewater, soil and material in the overflow area.
  • If you are in contact with wastewater, soil and material from the spill area, quickly bathe and wash your clothes.
  • If you use a private well within 0.5 miles of the overflow site, use water distilled or boiled for one minute or longer for drinking, cooking, tooth brushing and bathing.
  • Have your well water tested before stopping distilling or boiling.
  • Contact water supply distributors to determine if purchased water is safe.
