Sugar Land’s budget office today recommended a 2.5 percent rate increase to residents’ solid waste fees, due to an increase in the city’s contract with waste management company Republic Services. No changes were proposed for water, wastewater, or surface water rates. City council member reviewed the city’s four enterprise funds, which handle revenues and expenses stemming from the operation of the city’s water, trash and sewer systems, along with its airport, as part of a weekly budget workshop meeting. The enterprise funds account for 31 percent of the city’s total expenditures, budget officer Justin Alderete said.The 2.5 percent increase to solid waste fees will cause homeowners’ bills to rise from $18 to $18.45, Alderete said. City staff and officials are continuing to finalize the city’s fiscal year 2018 budget, having set a deadline of Sept. 19.
