The Missouri City City Council approved an ordinance calling for a November election, and also approved a contract to have Adams Street repaved during a meeting Monday. Citing safety concerns, a vote to allow an adult day care facility was postponed.   Council Member Don Smith was absent.

Vote on PD amendment to allow adult day care postponed

Council members postponed voting on whether to allow an adult day care facility to open in a shopping plaza on Hwy. 6 after expressing unhappiness with the applicant’s plan to use an island in the plaza’s parking lot as a recreation area. As part of her plans for the adult day care, applicant Deshun Stanley proposed putting benches in a grassy island in the middle of the parking lot where the facility would be located, and building a fence around it. “This doesn’t make sense to me," said Mayor Allen Owen, citing safety concerns. "I would not want my relatives staying there.” The idea for turning the island into a recreation area came about because state law requires adult day care facilities to have an outdoor space that can be used for recreation purposes, planning manager Jennifer Gomez said. “It’s not a busy parking lot at all,” Stanley told council members. “People will be attending them [day care users].” Stanley said the business would have enough staff to help the residents cross the parking lot to the island and to supervise them while there. Council members suggested Stanley find a location for the business that has an outdoor area attached to the building. “[An adult day care] is a good idea, but I think you have to find another spot,” Owen said. The shopping plaza in which Stanley sought to put the facility is located north of the Hwy. 6 and Lake Olympia Parkway intersection. It is home to a storage facility, a restaurant and an insurance agency, among other businesses. Adams Street repaving contract approved The council voted to authorize City Manager Anthony Snipes to execute a contract worth nearly $2.4 million with Triple B Services to repave Adams Street from Fifth Street to Texas Parkway. The roadwork is scheduled to begin before fall, with the contract calling for work to be completed within 240 calendar days. Triple B Services, based in Huffman, submitted a low bid of $2,378,436.80, according to meeting documents. In addition to repaving the street, the project calls for rebuilding driveway approaches along Adams, improvements to intersections, and the installation of a sidewalk along the north side of Adams, according to meeting documents.
