The YMCA of Greater Houston launched Operation Backpack at participating locations, including locations in Alvin, League City, Pearland, and Webster.

Residents donate backpacks filled with school supplies to a participating YMCA location. The backpacks are delivered to school districts which then distributes the backpacks and supplies to children in need. This year's back-to-school program is expected to reach a record 120,000 students, according to a statement from the YMCA of Greater Houston. The initiative was launched on July 11 and runs through August 11.

“YMCA Operation Backpack began 13 years ago, and we are striving to reach our largest goal this year by providing school supplies and backpacks to 120,000 children whose families otherwise might not be able to afford them. This is a special initiative for us as it enables children to be well-prepared for school and their futures," said Heather Saucier, a spokesperson for the YMCA of Greater Houston.

The list of accepted school supplies can be found on the YMCA’s website and includes basics such as pens, pencils, folders and notebooks. Pre-filled backpacks can be purchased at local HEBs.

Parents who want to inquire about receiving a backpack can contact their school district.

"So many children in the Greater Houston area live at or below the poverty line and need help with items that some might take for granted. We want all children to have a great start to the school year and to know they are valued,” Saucier said.

Students who live outside participating school districts may be able to receive backpacks if they contact the nearest participating school district and if there are still backpacks available, said Rosie Avalos, membership service leader at Thelma Ley Anderson Family YMCA in Alvin.

“We will help whoever needs help if the backpacks are available,” Avalos said.
