The first bout of STAAR test results have been taken, graded, processed and released in the 2016-17 year—and while some results show increases, others show a dip in proficiency.

Eighty-one percent of fifth graders and 74 percent of eighth graders passed the mathematics exam on first attempt, which reveals an increase in scores for both grades.

On the other hand, 71 percent of fifth graders and 76 percent of eighth graders passed the reading exam on their first try. This shows a slight dip in comparison to the 2015-16 rates, where 73 percent of fifth graders and 79 percent of eighth graders did so.

A big change in STAAR performance results will include new labels that indicate proficiency in a subject matter. These labels are masters grade level, meets grade level, approaches grade level and does not meet grade level. The first three are all passing grades.

Here is how STAAR scores compared for the past two academic years in each of the tests already graded:

Students must pass these exams to advance to the next grade. Additional opportunities to take the exam will be in mid-May and June.

Results from the remaining tests will be released as they are graded on the TEA's website.
