Storage industry growing in The Woodlands areaSeveral high-quality self-storage facilities have opened over the last six months in The Woodlands area with more set to open this year to cater to population growth.

CubeSmart and Amazing Spaces have opened facilities in The Woodlands area over the past couple of months.

Jim Carman, vice president of commercial land development for The Howard Hughes Corporation, said the The Woodlands Development Company decided to venture into self-storage operations because of the rise in opportunity.

The Development Company opened CubeSmart on College Park Drive in February and will open another location on FM 2978 in April.

“The storage industries have been performing well above other markets,” Carman said. “There were few storage opportunities in The Woodlands before. There were a few [options], but they were virtually full and charged a high rate due to scarcity. We knew we could deliver a higher-quality product.”

Carman said the new CubeSmart facilities offer carpeted corridors, heavy security, an alarm in every unit, gated entry and usage of a free moving truck.

“It wasn’t about growth, it was about mobility,” Carman said. “People move more often today so they need storage opportunities. We also have an aging demographic here who are downsizing their homes, and so they have extra things.”

Kathy Tautenhaun, vice president of Amazing Spaces, said the new storage facility the company opened in February on FM 2978 has catered to residents in the back end of The Woodlands. She also said the storage industry is going through a period of growth in the community.

“The Woodlands is our target market,” Tautenhaun said. “There’s been a lot of new development in The Woodlands, and so we’ve gone through a little growth. For example, office space here went through a wave of growth, so that’s what is happening here with the [storage industry.]”

Tautenhaun said she and her husband created Amazing Spaces because they were not happy with other options in the area, so they created a facility that offered more extensive maintenance. Aside from the new facility that opened in February on FM 2978, Tautenhaun said a new location will open in 2018 off Holzwarth Road to cater to the ExxonMobil campus and Springwoods Village area.

“We offer a new concept in storage,” she said. “We have conference rooms, alarms on all units and a nice seating area with free coffee. Our industry doesn’t have a great persona, but we try to make it more apt for people to come here.”
