Montgomery City Council discussed several topics during last night’s regular meeting, Feb. 28. All council members were present with the exception of Council Member Jon Bickford, who was absent.

Here are a few highlights from the council’s agenda:

1. The council unanimously adopted an ordinance cancelling the city’s general election in May.

Positions 1, 3 and 5, held by Council Members Jon Bickford, T.J. Wilkerson and Dave McCorquodale, respectively, are up for reelection in the city’s general election on May 6. However, as of the deadline to file as a candidate all three positions remain unopposed, therefore dismissing the need for the city to hold an election.

The ordinance passed cancels the May 6 election and all three council members up for reelection will automatically return to office for another term.

2. Public hearing held and scheduled for land annexation.

A public hearing was held regarding the proposed annexation of a 14.5 acre tract of land to the west of the future Pizza Shack location on Hwy. 105, upon which two commercial buildings will be constructed. No one voiced concerns during the public hearing at the start of council’s meeting and council unanimously agreed to hold another at the March 24 meeting at 6 p.m.

3. Council unanimously tabled Longview Greens Miniature Golfing variance request.

A variance request was made by Jason Long, owner of Longview Greens Miniature Golfing, to allow for a temporary gravel parking surface at the future business for about 6 months until the business can afford to pave the parking lot. Unsure if this request falls into the jurisdiction of the city council, after much debate the council decided to table the decision until more research could be done.

This tabling could potentially delay the construction of Longview Greens Miniature Golfing.
