Students and staff from select Austin ISD schools will celebrate the life of Martin Luther King Jr. on Wednesday with speeches and musical performances held at the district's central offices. In honor of King's work, the event will focus on the themes of equity and exclusivity.
The keynote speaker is Peniel Joseph, the director of the Center for the Study of Race and Democracy at the LBJ School of Public Affairs at The University of Texas, who will elaborate on the event's themes. AISD Superintendent Paul Cruz will also make remarks.
Musical acts will include performances by the Covington Jazz Band, the Bertha Sadler Means Young Women's Leadership Academy choir, and spoken word and oratory performances by students from Jordan Elementary School and the Gus Garcia Young Men's Leadership Academy.
The event will take place from 9-10 a.m. at the AISD board auditorium, located at 1111 W. Sixth St., Austin.
