Kirstyn’s Krew has reached its fundraising goal and will be taking twice as many foster children shopping this year than in 2015.
“Yes, we have reached our goal and gone a little over,” said Velvet Philpot, founder Kirstyn Jackson's grandmother, who organizes the fundraisers.
Kirstyn’s Krew is a nonprofit fundraiser that offers foster children a chance to have a shopping spree. It was founded in 2015 by Kirstyn, 11, once a foster child herself. In October,
Community Impact Newspaper reported the money Kirstyn’s Krew raised in 2015 was enough to fulfill the wish lists of 52 area foster children.
Philpot contacts area agencies, such as Child Advocates, Child Protective Services, Arrow Ministries and DePelchin Children’s Center, to determine which children will be selected for the shopping spree. This year their efforts resulted in a doubling of funds.
"We are treating 100 foster kids,” Philpot said.
The shopping will occur beginning Dec. 13, over the course of four trips to the store. Kirstyn’s Krew selected Target at Cypresswood Drive and I-45 for the shopping spree.
Kirstyn said last year the children chose practical items with their spending money, such as shoes and clothes, and some even picked out food items. She said she is hoping more children pick out toys and “good stuff” this year.
