The Lone Star College System board of trustees appointed District 3 trustee Alton Smith to serve as the new chairman of the board during Thursday’s meeting.

Following the Nov. 8 election results, former chairwoman Linda Good kept her position as District 7 trustee and incumbent David Vogt kept his position as District 5 trustee. Myriam Saldivar ran unopposed for the District 6 trustee position and is the first Latina to be elected to the college system’s board of trustees.

Additionally, Saldivar was appointed to serve as assistant secretary of the board. Position 2 trustee Kyle Scott will serve as vice chairman of the board, and District 9 trustee Ken Lloyd will serve as board secretary.

LSCS trustees serve six-year, staggered terms, and there are nine members total that make up the board. The college system is currently transitioning from at-large elections to by-district elections, which is why some trustees are still referred to by position held rather than district number. All trustees will be elected by district by 2019.
