It has yet to be determined where the 360 students who were displaced from T.A. Brown Elementary School will attend the 2017-18 school year, but they will not return to Brown, Austin ISD Superintendent Paul Cruz informed to the board of trustees on Monday. “Right now we know the school cannot be used,” Cruz said. “That facility will not have students in it next year.” On Nov. 4, Brown Elementary was closed indefinitely after an assessment of the building’s crawl spaces uncovered extensive damage to the concrete floor beneath the classroom wings, cafeteria and administrative offices. As a result, students in pre-K and kindergarten were relocated to Reilly Elementary School, and students in grades one through five were placed at Allan Elementary School for the remainder of the school year. District 3 Trustee Ann Teich said she has received positive feedback from the parents of students relocated to Allan Elementary. Still, some expressed a desire to have all of Brown’s students housed under the same roof. “I hope the administration will be looking at combining the two campuses,” she said. “The parents in District 3 are very resourceful, but sometimes they have difficulty participating in things like PTA if they have kids in two different schools.” District 6 Trustee Paul Saldana urged Cruz to expedite long-term plans so that families and community members are not left in the dark regarding where their children will attend school next year. “I think it’s really important that we do our best. They want to know what the long-term plan is,” he said. “I want to make sure we keep this is a board priority moving forward.” Cruz assured the board that discussions are underway about where to house displaced Brown Elementary students for the 2017-18 school year as part of the district’s extensive overhaul of its Facilities Master Plan, scheduled for board adoption in March.
