During the Nov. 14 Commissioners Court meeting, commissioners discussed the possibility of holding a bond election in 2018 to help fund multiple roadway construction projects along some of the county’s highways and arterial roads.
County Judge Keith Self said the last bond election held by the county was in 2007, and the last bond was sold this year. Self said he wanted the court to think about how the county would contribute to a required 10 percent match of local funds to state funds once state transportation funds are released through propositions 1 and 7.
Propositions 1 and 7 are aimed at funding road projects by allocating a portion of oil and gas tax to the State Highway Fund. More than 83 percent of Texas voters who voted in the Nov. 3, 2015, election gave approval to the Proposition 7 constitutional amendment to dedicate more funding to the SHF.
Commissioner Duncan Webb said the county could see state funding within the next two years. Self asked the county’s budget department to determine how much the county could bond, adding the county needs to be as ready as it can be to secure state funding.
