Lakeway City Council was busy tonight, passing a resolution that authorizes Mayor Joe Bain to act on behalf of a proposed estimated $12 million-$16 million police station that could go before voters in May. In case you missed the meeting, here’s what happened:
  • Mayor Bain was authorized to negotiate and execute an agreement with Brinkley Sargent and Wiginton Architects to design schematic drawings and provide a reliable cost estimate for a new police station. City Manager Steve Jones said the group was selected from eight architectural firms. Although the fee will be negotiated and is undetermined at this point, the cost will likely be in the $1 million total range, with 15 percent of that possible fee covering the cost associated with pre-construction work, including the police station’s design phase and estimate.
  • Mayor Bain was authorized to negotiate and execute an agreement with contractor SpawGlass to be the construction manager at risk, or CMAR, in the pre-construction phase of the city’s proposed police station. A CMAR commits to deliver a project that would not exceed a guaranteed maximum price based on construction documents. Jones said SpawGlass, selected out of four similar firms, provided a firm fee of $15,000 for the pre-construction work and would draw a total fee of $1.2 million to build the full project.
  • City Council approved a resolution to reimburse the city for general funds used to pay for the pre-construction services related to the proposed police station until bond funds become available.
