Here are a few takeaways from Tuesday's city council meeting in Montgomery. 1. City residents will see a 31 cent increase in garbage and trash pickup service rates beginning Oct. 20. City Administrator Jack Yates said Waste Management raised its prices for a cost of living increase. During Tuesday's meeting, the council adopted an ordinance amending the service rates charged inside the city. 2. Construction on a Kroger Marketplace, located on the northwest side of the Hwy. 105 and FM 2854 intersection, will be finished in December and open to customers in the first quarter of 2017. 3. The city of Montgomery will host National Night Out from 6-8 p.m. on Oct. 4 in Cedar Brake Park, located on Hwy. 105 in Montgomery. Members of the city police and fire departments will attend the event as well as members of the military. The community event includes free admission, food and other entertainment. 4. Council adopted a tree ordinance to protect trees of 10 inches or more during construction and provide a plan for tree replacement. "We've been talking about a tree ordinance for at least 12 years," Mayor Kirk Jones said. Yates said the ordinance applies to property that is 5 acres or more within the city limits, excluding some property types. "Replacing the trees [is] required inside canopies reduced by 20 percent, and tree protection during construction is required and a plan is required," Yates said. "The ordinance does not apply to utility companies who need to remove trees or to state agencies, such as [the Texas Department of Transportation]." 5. Council will hold a public hearing at 6 p.m. Oct. 25 regarding allowing Cowpokes, a new restaurant, to serve alcohol. Owner David Gerrard said he and his wife plan to open the restaurant late this fall to serve country cooking, frozen custard and hot sandwiches. Cowpokes will be located in the former Heritage House at 22016 Hwy. 105, Montgomery.
