False statements are being made and spread within the community about the city's $720 million mobility bond set for a Nov. 8 vote, Mayor Steve Adler said Wednesday at an Austin board of Realtors forum on mobility issues. The mayor also addressed the so-called inaccuracies at a Central Texas Democratic Forum later in the day. Here are some of the assertions about the mobility bond that Adler made in response to the dubious things he said he has heard in the community:

1. Taxpayers' monthly tax bill would increase by less than $5.

Adler said this has been misconstrued as at least a $5 increase in monthly property taxes if the bond passes.

2. The mobility bond is about congestion.

"Traffic engineers have looked at these plans and say that they assist us with traffic congestion in this city," Adler said. "Wait times [at South Lamar Boulevard, for example] would decrease 61 percent if we do this work. If not, they go up by 216 percent. If we don't do this, the congestion that is already making us crazy will get even worse than it is right now."

3. There's nothing in these plans that calls for us to take away lanes.

"I have heard that we lose tens of miles in lanes in this bond package, and that's not true," he said. "In terms of travel lanes there is not the loss of travel lanes to support bicycles. It's not true."
