Stageworks Theatre, located on Grant Road in Cy-Fair, received a $4,500 grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts this month to further the creative work being done by artists of all ages. Administrative Director Liz Graven said, although the value varies year to year, the theater receives this funding annually. “We’ve always gotten a grant from TCA, and we’re lucky that we do,” she said. “It’s part of our normal budgeting process, and they have been very generous to us.” Graven said the funding would be used for various performances throughout the season. Most programming is funded through private donations, ticket sales and tuition costs, she said. The theater staff recently hired a consultant for grant work with hopes to continue building a relationship with the TCA and begin reaching out to other organizations. Stageworks was founded as Houston Family Arts Center in 2005 as a small community theater performing from a local church stage. Last April, the theater officially changed its name and launched a rebranding campaign to better reflect its purpose. “People thought we did painting, sculpture and all kinds of art when really we just do theater,” Graven said. “We’re still very family-oriented, but we do more than kids’ shows, so we wanted to find a name that better encompassed what we did.” Stageworks has grown exponentially in the past decade, Graven said, now featuring a Main Stage season along with an Acting Academy for 6- to 18-year-olds. Conservatory classes also offer more in-depth acting lessons. Upcoming Main Stage shows: Oct. 7-30: Little Shop of Horrors Nov. 25-Dec. 18: Oliver! Jan. 27-Feb. 19: The Odd Couple March 17-April 9: The Producers April 28-May 21: Peter and the Starcatcher June 9-July 2: The Elephant Man July 21-Aug. 6: The Wizard of Oz
