The Texas Department of Transportation is expected to complete its overlay of Business 249 and the connecting roads and driveways within five weeks, Tomball Director of Public Works David Esquivel said.
TxDOT started the next phase of overlaying Business 249 on Aug. 7, adding the tack coat—or binding agent—over the old asphalt on Business 249 from just south of Theis Lane near the Wal-Mart Supercenter to Rudel Road, Esquivel said.
“This is what’s going to bind the new asphalt with the existing one that’s underneath,” Esquivel said. “Then they can do the hot mix [blacktop] on top of that.”
Overlay work began on the center lane and will extend outward from there in the coming days, Tomball City Manager George Shackelford said.
“They actually put down the entire left turn lane—the center section—from Wal-Mart to Rudel [Road on Aug. 7],” Shackelford said.
TxDOT began repairing and working to overlay portions of Business 249 and FM 2920 in Tomball in mid-June. The $3.8 million project includes adding a continuous center turn lane in downtown Tomball and removing on-street parallel parking. Construction has been done overnight since the project began.
Esquivel said the grinding up of asphalt is nearly finished around the connecting roads and driveways to Business 249. The overlay of those areas will be completed about two weeks after the overlay of Business 249 is complete in the next two and a half weeks, he said.
“[TxDOT has ground] up to an inch and a half of asphalt,” Esquivel said. “Then they went back and looked for areas that needed to be repaired [and fixed them].”
After the tack coat is applied, TxDOT will pour the blacktop, which is the final step of the Business 249 overlay project. Esquivel said TxDOT will move ahead with the FM 2920 overlay in the next few weeks.
“[TxDOT is] planning on doing all of [Business] 249 first before they turn onto [FM] 2920, and more than likely they’ll follow the same pattern and do the center lanes [first] and work their way out to the edges,” Esquivel said.
