In May, the McKinney City Council reached consensus on a plan to get public transit moving again within McKinney city limits. During the June 7 City Council meeting, Council voted to allow city staff to seek the designation of becoming an Urban Transit District, which would include only McKinney's city limits. After receiving the designation, the city would then be able to determine what funding, if any, it would be eligible to receive. The city is still working with the North Texas Council of Governments and its Regional Transportation Committee on an interlocal agreement that would allow NCTCOG to obtain and hold the city's direct recipient status. That would mean any state or federal funding would be given to NCTCOG to be spent only within the possible future urban transit district. City officials said once the first draft is complete, both parties will have the opportunity to discuss any changes that need to be made. Any future decisions made regarding public transit will be brought back before Council for an official vote. Read more about the city's plan to provide public transit and the next steps here.
