The nearly 12-year-old master plan for Rollingwood Park, also known as Hatley Park, at Nixon and Gentry drives in Rollingwood, is being updated.
The current master plan, designed in 2004 by architect John Warrick, is a map of the city’s park including its fields, parking lots and playscapes.
Amy Pattillo, former City Council member and current Rollingwood Park Commission member, said the master plan is missing a detailed list of all items in the park and needs to be updated to show the equipment and other improvements that have been completed in the past 10 years.
She said the park commission is cataloging everything in the park and identifying how much is spent on the park’s upkeep—from maintaining water fountains and playground equipment to mowing and mulching costs.
“What we don’t have is a document that we can look at, where we have all the information,” she said. “We just haven’t connected the true costs of certain areas.”
Some of the items missing from the current master plan include the outdoor fitness stations that Pattillo said were installed four or five years ago in the upper park and the community garden established in 2011.
On May 18, Rollingwood City Council discussed what the new master plan might look like.
“The problem we have—and I tend to agree—is that our master plan is really nothing more than a map,” Council Member Michael Dyson said. Dyson serves as council liaison to the park commission. “What the map depicts isn’t the actual usage of the park currently, and it doesn’t necessarily show what improvements exist currently.”
The council discussed soliciting the help of an engineering or landscape architecture firm that can assist the city to determine the best design for a master plan and future improvements.
Council Member Joe Basham suggested surveying citizens to find out what future park improvements or additions they would like to see.
