Firefighters surpassed the 2015 record by raising more than $140,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). “I knew the amount ahead of time, but couldn’t announce it until we got schedules coordinated,” said Plano Firefighters Association 2149 President Wes Holland. “It was killer not letting anyone know what it would be.” In recognition of the accomplishment, LaRosiliere, Mayor pro tem Lissa Smith and council members David Downs and Rick Grady agreed to wash a fire truck. The quartet did more than just wash, quickly turning the hoses on each other. Joining in the horseplay was Logan Elder, a fifth-grader who suffers from a muscle disease. He helped the fire department during this year’s MDA fundraiser. “Meeting Logan and some of the other ambassadors really drives us and helps push us harder,” Holland said. Money raised from the drive helps support programs like MDA summer camp where kids like Logan can participate in activities like swimming and horseback riding, which are often off-limits to muscle disease sufferers. “When they go to camp, they are never told ‘no’,” Holland said. “It’s something special that they absolutely love.” Nobody told Logan “no” on Monday either as he enthusiastically sprayed the mayor and Fire Chief Sam Greif with the hose.
