LCP Connected 2016 Travis County Commissioners Court, from left: Margaret Gómez, Precinct 4; Gerald Daugherty, Precinct 3; Judge Sarah Eckhardt; Brigid Shea, Precinct 2; Ron Davis, Precinct 1[/caption] Travis County commissioners approved more than $8,500 for after-school programs in four Austin-area charter schools during Commissioners Court May 24. Commissioners unanimously approved the funding during the consent agenda, so commissioners did not discuss the matter before voting. Travis County, through its CAPITAL AmeriCorps Project, will be funding $1,536 for NYOS Charter School, Inc. In addition, the county will be increasing its funding for Eden Park Academy to $3,488 and for Cedars International Academy to $3,704. From its inception, the project has helped more than 20,000 children to date. Funding is provided to after-school programs because students who participate in the programs have fewer behavioral problems, handle conflict better, and show improved social skills and enhanced academic performance, according to Travis County. NYOS Charter School has two locations in Northwest Austin; Eden Park Academy is in Southwest Austin, and Cedars International Academy is in Northwest Austin.
