The Fort Bend ISD board of trustees canvassed the May 7 election results and elected new officers at its meeting May 16. Jim Rice and Dave Rosenthal were sworn in as trustees for Position 3 and 7, respectively, while Kristin Tassin was elected board president.
Rice and Rosenthal were re-elected for new three-year terms, while Tassin—Position 4 trustee—will act as board president for one year. Position 1 trustee Jason Burdine was elected board vice president and Position 6 trustee Addie Heyliger was voted board secretary.
“I’m excited to take on this new role and continue our progress educating students in Fort Bend ISD,” said Tassin, who has been on the board for two years. “[The role requires] a lot more time, [and] a lot more commitment.”
Position 2 trustee Grayle James served as president the last two years. She said being elected to the position twice was an honor.
“[Two years is] a great time to have done a lot of good work,” James said. “It’s time for me to step down and let some other people step up and be the leaders for our school district.”
The president presides at all board meetings unless unable to attend. The president has the right to make motions and resolutions, discuss and vote on all matters that come before the board, according to trustees’ policy manual.
The vice president acts in place of the president if the latter is unable to perform his or her duties. The secretary ensures an accurate record of the meetings is kept and meeting notices are posted and sent. The secretary also acts in place of the president and vice president if both are absent.
“On a personal level, I just want to thank Grayle because we have spent hours and hours and hours together [through] some very tense and stressful times,” FBISD Superintendent Charles Dupre said. “But I have been consistently able to rely on her relationship, her heart for students and her faithfulness in serving as a [trustee] and a leader in this community.”
