Lakeway Elementary School, the oldest of the six Lake Travis ISD elementary school playgrounds, is getting an upgrade.

The renovations, which were approved by the LTISD board of trustees March 22, will make the playground compliant with the 2010 American with Disabilities Act Standards for Accessible Design, said Marco Alvarado, LTISD’s director of communications, media and community relations.

Renovations include replacing the engineered wood fiber chips with artificial turf supported by a rubberized base and creating one consistent level throughout the playground. Per ADA requirements, the playground will also have a separate play area for 2-through-5-year-old students.

The $580,000 cost of the project will be covered by the 2012 bond fund contingency account, Alvarado said. It is expected to begin in June and be completed by the end of July, he said.

The remaining five playgrounds will be renovated to meet ADA standards pending the passage of a future bond, potentially in fall 2017, Alvarado said.
