Williamson County could soon be looking for one or more volunteers to live and work at two county parks as part of a host program.

On March 1, Williamson County commissioners unanimously approved moving forward with searching for volunteers for the Parks Host Program. The program is a mutual agreement between the county and a volunteer who will live on one of the county’s parks to help the staff, said Randy Bell, Williamson County director of parks and recreation. The volunteer will greet campers, and assist park visitors and staff. In return the volunteer will have their own campsite at the park.

“It’s an industry standard that is used around the nation,” Bell said. “It helps supplement operations in our parks.”

Bell said the volunteers could help keep the restrooms clean, assist with litter pickup and assist visitors with campsites and questions. Volunteers will likely be able to sign up for three-month assignments.

The county is looking to find a host for Berry Springs Park and Preserve as well as the River Ranch County Park, which is under construction. County staff are converting a campsite at Berry Creek to add water, electricity and sewer hookups to make it a host site, Bell said.

In the future the county may also set up a park host at the Williamson County Expo Center if there are hookups for recreation vehicles, he said.
