The Austin ISD board of trustees is scheduled to vote on changing the name of Lee Elementary School during its regularly scheduled meeting March 28, board President Kendall Pace said Feb. 29.
The board is scheduled to take action after the Lee Elementary Campus Advisory Council voted unanimously Jan. 21 to recommend changing the name of Lee Elementary to the board.
Pace said the board will also discuss the name change issue during its March 21 board work session.
For months, AISD constituents have urged the board to remove the name of Confederate States of America figure Robert E. Lee from the elementary school.
At the school board's Feb. 29 meeting, 24 people spoke about the issue, including Lee Elementary parent Kelly Willis.
“The truth is, Robert E. Lee stood for slavery,” she said.
In contrast, Lee Elementary parent Dan Roberts said he opposes the name change because the unanimous vote by the Campus Advisory Council did not represent the views of the entire Lee Elementary community.
On Nov. 23,
the board approved a change to district policy that paved the way for Lee Elementary to be renamed.
