Collin College students will see an increase to their tuition beginning in fall 2016.
The Collin College board of trustees approved the increase during the Feb. 23 board meeting. There will be an increase of $3 per credit hour for in-district students and a $5 increase per credit hour for out-of-district and out-of-state/out-of-country students effective fall 2016.
Collin College President Neil Matkin said the increase in tuition is expected to generate nearly $2 million in additional revenue during fiscal year 2016-2017. The additional revenue will help in the expansion of workforce programs and support the additional student services planned as part of the quality enhancement plan required for the regional Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accreditation.
The last time Collin College increased tuition was in 2014. In-district students saw a $1 increase and out-of-district and out-of-state/out-of-country students saw a $3 increase.
Matkin said the goal to increase the tuition is to cover the cost of instruction. As the county continues to grow Matkin and the board want to make sure the college has a balanced budget.
Matkin said he expects tuition to increase again in the next five years.
While the college is increasing tuition, it continues to have the lowest tuition compared to surrounding community colleges and the entire state.
