Handcrafters, knitters and techies will soon have a dedicated Makerspace, known as the Pfab Lab, at the Pflugerville Public Library.
A Makerspace is an area where people come together to work on projects using tools high-end tools such as a 3-D printer and receive hands-on learning.
“For the past few years, we’ve been incorporating maker-type programs—everything from arts and crafts to more technology-oriented things like 3D design and teaching people how to solder,” said Bette McDowell, Pflugerville’s adult services librarian. “The Makerspace, once it’s under construction, will be a more dedicated space for us to do these programs.”
McDowell said the equipment is currently spread out throughout the library and classes are held where they can find room.
“This will be a room where everything is available all the time, so we can do programs and let people use the equipment on their own,” she said.
The Pfab Lab will feature items such as 3D printers, electronic circuit kits, sewing/serger machines, cookware, a green screen with movie-making software and a variety of tools and supplies for a range of projects.
“We don’t have a schedule yet, but we’re hoping that it will be completed in time for the Maker Pfest, June 4, which kicks off our Summer Reading program,” Library Director Jennifer Coffey said.
Library directors said they hope to add volunteers to conduct more classes and assist the library staff in supervising the Makerspace area.
