In a surprising turn of events during the Feb. 16 city council meeting, the McKinney City Council opted out of an offer brought by the North Central Texas Council of Governments to supply emergency funding for a 90-day temporary contract with Dallas Area Rapid Transit.
The service would have required a little more than $8,000 from the city, which was already designated in the FY 2015-16 budget for public transit through the city's former provider Texoma Area Paratransit System. The city had been on a month to month contract with TAPS before ultimately voting to end the relationship with the financially troubled transit agency.
The decision to deny the temporary service was unexpected by some council members and by DART, who began making calls to would-be McKinney riders earlier this month.
At this time, the council has no consensus on what public transit in McKinney will look like in the future and has no public transit options.
