A taproom with 40 craft beers and shop with more than 400 beer brands is coming to Southwest Austin.

Hedgehog Bottleshop & Barrelhouse is the concept of co-founders Dash and Jonathan Harris. The South Austin couple is planning to open the taproom and store in July at the Southwest Center, located at 9521 W. Hwy. 290.

The company launched a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign Dec. 1 to help pay for the build-out costs of Hedgehog Bottleshop & Barrelhouse.

Dash said she and husband Jonathan were born and raised in Austin, but lived in Portland for a few years after graduating from the University of Texas at Austin. The couple saw the taproom and store concept in Portland, she said. When they moved back to Austin, they wanted to bring the idea to their hometown, she added.

The couple chose the Hedgehog name and logo because of their Irish-Scottish heritage and family crest history, Dash said.

“When I married into the Harris family, my sister looked up their crest and said, 'There’s hedgehogs on it,'” Dash said. “It’s so indicative of this adorable family that I married into.”

In addition to the taps and store shelves, Hedgehog Bottleshop & Barrelhouse will include lounge areas, an outdoor patio and special events such as beer education classes, trivia nights and live music.

All Kickstarter pledges more than $5 include an invite to the opening party, Dash said.
