Austin Atheists Helping the Homeless is a group of secular volunteers who collect, sort and distribute basic living items to people who are homeless at monthly giveaways. ATXAHH is 100 percent volunteer-based. Many of its volunteers also knit or crochet items to be given away at the giveaways—washcloths for the summer and hats and scarves for the winter.

Blackland Community Development Corp., or Blackland CDC, builds, maintains and leases houses to families who earn less than 60 percent of the median family income (MFI) in Austin. The organization also provides transitional housing to nine homeless families and provides them with case management support. Blackland CDC is the only neighborhood-based nonprofit in the U.S. to offer a transitional housing program. Volunteers help the community and families in a variety of ways such as cleaning, painting and gardening.

The Blood and Tissue Center of Central Texas is the exclusive provider and guardian of the community blood supply for approximately 39 medical facilities in the 10-county service area of Central Texas. The Care Communities recruits and trains volunteers to provide emotional and domestic support to those affected by serious illness, including cancer and HIV. Care teams consist of three to six trained volunteers that provide companionship and share the efforts of assistance with daily living tasks (such as light housework, running errands or going to an appointment) for a care partner, who is someone living with a serious illness without a strong support system.

The Council on Recovery, formerly Austin Recovery, aims to bring about the in-depth changes that are essential for overcoming addiction.
